There is no interface between the UPS > and the computer other than the amount of power consumption. localsearch is designed to index the local file system when the system is idle *and* the system is powered by AC power. Without upower it does not know if the system is powered by AC power, thus the indexing can be running even if the system is powered by a battery, draining the power in the battery quickly.
