The suggestion was made to try lynx.  That turned out to be a good 
thought as after compiling lynx a screen comes up at a command line with 
F1 although it's skeletal.  Links does not.

But using your suggestion I get the full text help screen with links.  
If I delete links I get the full text help screen with lynx.  No GUI 
program launches.

I just noticed "Not all attributes could be read." displays when opening 
a file.
