Hi Richard,

That's kind of a weird error. Can you first try GIMP 3.0.6? 3.0.4 has a 
series of remote code execution vulnerabilities in it (see 
https://linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/advisories/consolidated.html#sa-12.4-016)

Note that at the same time you will need to update gegl as well!
