Not a display manager, though running `startx` in a TTY will start the
graphical environment for you.

I like to think of Ch 24 as more of a base, and some of it can be
replaced, but for the most part, everything else gets installed onto it
and requires that base. The extra stuff provides a more in depth
environment and powers a lot of applications. GTK is a good example,
which powers Firefox. Some desktop environments depend on such toolkits
while others don't.

If you have the ability to, I'd get a binary distro on another system
or drive and test out the BLFS and SLFS offerings, and look into what
they need. For saving time, I'd forego KDE Plasma and GNOME,
potentially also LXQt. Once you have that chapter 24 base, everything
should be more straightforward, hopefully!
