The problem I can see is the lack of an explanation for --with-abi-
version=5 (i.e. it *changes* the ABI version, not *appending* an ABI
version).

Arguably this can be even more puzzling for the optional libcrypt.so.1
in libxcrypt (--enable-obsolete-api=glibc vs. --enable-obsolete-api=no
even more sounds like "appending" something instead of changing
something).

In this case the INSTALL file in the ncurses source tree clearly
explains --with-abi-version=.  Well but in the chroot we don't have a
thing to view the text file yet...
