This should be sent to the lfs-support mailing list.  I see you subscribed to 
lfs-book.  That's not really what you want.  See

To answer your question, what are you seeing that needs cpio?  I do not know of 
anything that the kernel does that needs cpio.  If you do find something that needs 
it, please let us know.
