I've also uploaded a new version to Debian based on a current CVS
snapshot.

During test builds on powerpc (both 32 and 64 bit) I noticed a
problem with the tst-calloc unit test (it triggers the SSP, but
only on all ppc* archs). I'm currently investigating that, so a
patch for that will probably come in the next couple of days.

I don't have any other immediate items on my TODO list; but I'd
appreciate a heads-up once you get the PIE stuff working on
amd64, so I can make sure the Debian package properly supports
it.
