Reliable unreliability with D-Link DWL-122 USB

Hello,

I'm new to this list but have been using linux-wlan
with my DWL-122 for over a year now. It has mostly
worked OK, but with the same problem happening once
per boot, on numerous combinations of hardware &
software.

I'd be interested to know whether the behaviour I get
is typical and whether it is likely to improve with
future wlan releases (are any due?) or if it's down to
hardware.

Adaptor: D-Link DWL-122 USB
PCs: ABit BH6 (Intel 440) / P3 450 ;
     MSI KM4M (Via KM400) / Athlon XP2600+
OS: From RedHat 8.0 to Fedora Core 3
Kernel: From 2.4.something to 2.6.11
linux-wlan version: from approx. pre20 to pre26

The behaviour I get is that wlan starts OK on boot via
hotplug, works until I load a couple of web pages,
then fails with:

hfa384x_usbin_ctlx: Could not match IN URB(0x8001,0)
to CTLX - ignored

At this point I can get it up & running again about
75% of the time with my wlanfix script, which just
does this:

ifdown wlan0
killall -HUP dhclient
modprobe -r wlan0
modprobe wlan0

In the 25% of cases where this doesn't work, I can
usually get it going by doing modprobe -r wlan0
followed by unplugging and replugging the adaptor.
