Kismet works but can't connect to any APs....

I'm using Auditor Security Collection with a Senao
NL-2511CD Plus EXT2 card. When I load kismet, I see a
very large number of open and closed access points.
Everything seems to work at first...

however, when I close kismet, I can't connect to any
of the access points I had just seen..

both wlan0 and wifi0 appear (together with a few other
ethX interfaces, since the laptop has a built-in
aironet card as well)

when I try to run the following commands (or several
variations), I can't get an IP address:

ifconfig wlan0 down
iwconfig wlan0 channel 6
iwconfig wlan0 mode managed
iwconfig wlan0 essid "linksys"
ifconfig wlan0 up
dhclient wlan0 (or sometimes pump -i wlan0)

i also can't get "iwlist wlan0 scanning" to show
anything either

from the output in kismet, it seems to see a ton of
access points.... why can't i connect to any of them?
i've tried both my own and some nearby ones... i have
been changing the channel to match the proper essid as
well
