Linux Standardized Desktop Tools

Hi!

When you sit down at a linux machine you allways know that you will have 
access to commands like 'ls' , 'rm' , 'ps' .. 'kill' . These set of utilities 
are the thing that make the linux distributions connected to eachother. Linux 
would not work if these tools had different names or did not exist on any 
distribution.

Well now we live in the 21th century and the command line is not the standard 
way of accessing a computer even though it is effective. Today we use desktop 
environments to access our computers such as KDE and GNOME. The problem is 
the when you switch from one desktop to another you have to learn a new set 
of graphical tools and that is especially hard for older people.

PROBLEM:

* Lack of a set of basic graphical tools (ex: File management , Process 
control , Control panel) that are consistent on all distributions.

SOLUTION:

* A set of GUI design guidelines and reference software these utilities.

These utilities can be  implemented in GNOME, KDE or any other GUI toolkit as 
long as they have the same look & feel. They should not have to look the same 
in color or theme but the buttons should be in the same place and perform the 
same functionality. 

Even if these tools existed there should be no limit to add other similar tool 
that look different and work different as long as you at least could expect 
these standardized tools to be present.
