Adding this comment from HJ Lu on the chance of getting non-generic code:

By default, gcc won't generate any AMD64/EM64T specific instructions unless
-march=xxx is used. If gcc generates any instructions specific to AMD64 or EM64T
without -march=xxx, it is a bug.
