The intent is more like a bibliography ... in ISO terms, informative
means "for giving additional information intended to assist the
understanding or use of the document." The idea is (in my mind) that,
for example, "RFC 1950: ZLIB Compressed Data Format Specification" is
required background reading if you are going to implement ZLIB, but it
does not specify how any of the interfaces actually work (which is now
specified in the LSB). The text calls out most of these (now
informative) refs via <XREF ...> tags, which will help the reader find
the document in question. So, dropping them would be a disservice to
all.
