of course long-term, nobody has a problem with it, but it did
cause some short-term grief as people didn't want to change
an already frozen (perhaps even shipping) product.

Yes, that's a possible approach too. We're not currently
using expect but it would make life a lot easier if we
did for the interview in lsb-runtime-test (right now you
have to type in the root password about a dozen times
during the test setup), and we do use the appbat python 
for running the qmtest harness.
