Oooooo, good idea!
It's name should be similar to the command line flag so maybe
--lsb-type and LSBTYPE or something.

I think it should be in addition to the command line flag and the precedent 
should be similar to things setup that way which I _think_ is,

Environment variable
Command line Flag
Default Value

That way the build environment can override a command line value set in a 
makefile or something, similar to CC= etc.
