Anybody else having problems with the ATI driver of the xorg-6.9.0 final update?

I installed the latest offering on the update site - final xorg-6.9.0 - 
and ran into a blinding darkness. Turns out the 2.6.12-14mdk kernel 
refuses to load the new fglrx driver.  I reported the problem to cooker 
way back back before Xmas. So it seems I did not win the end-of-year 
lottery.
