I've same problem.  with ati card. 
I've got 1024x768 but the monitor can get 1280x1024. 
perhaps a bug in ddcxinfos ?

I have tried MandrakeMove on several computers and it always seems that the screen 
resolution is not optimized.  For instance, on a Dell C400 with an Intel i810 chipset, the best 
screen resolution was 800x600, while the graphics card has the ability to hit 1024x768 and 
the LCD screen is optimized for that resolution.  Reports have shown that Knoppix uses the 
higher resolution, which is what would be expected of MandrakeMove.
