Have just tried that and it reported that everything was up-to-date then 
tried another mirror and reported the same thing except that "Main 
media" was not available.  Nothing in the destination directory.

If there is something missing I do not know what it is or what version

No gftp, and urpmi gftp failed; cleaning stale lock
then the unknown symbol message for libnssutil3 just as before.

I tried running thunderbird as root and it went into the setup dialogue, 
so that looked hopeful, but it failed immediately with the unknown 
symbol message for a user.  Not a good idea to run firefox as root but 
at least it started up and then crashed with a load of messages about 
missing plugins and one which was ELF32.  For a user it fails to get 
past the unknown symbol error.

I am still puzzled as to why it all worked yesterday but not today.  
urpmi worked flawlessly and firefox ran fine.  I had not installed 
thunderbird.

All I did in that first session was use EasyURPMI, install ruby and tk 
extras via urpmi, edit .emacs, and install gqview and me-tv and set up 
the channels for the latter.  I tested most of my ruby based 
applications and closed down.

As far as I can remember, at no point was updating rpmdrake mentioned.

Some kind of corruption should be ruled out by the fact that a few 
others have reported problems with mozilla* and urpmi and all mention 
libnssutil3.  None the less it looks like a reinstall is in order, 
paying close attention to what happens to urpmi etc during the desktop 
configuration exercise.  And, must avoid the update applet.
