Following Gary's suggestion I tried urpmi but was presented with one 
choice only, the x86_64 one.  Sudden thought, no i586 media.  Went to 
easyurpmi and added those for Mandriva official.  However still no 
choice so I tried mcc and that did offer the i586 version.  It also 
needed to update rpmdrake to deal with requests for 32-bit rpms.  
Thunderbird installed and indexed all my old mail folders.  Have not 
tried sending email yet.  The installation did complain about old 
formats and unknown MIME types, etc but the application works <shrugs 
shoulders>.  Thanks again Gary.

It looks like the trouble I had should be submitted as a bug.  No time 
just now.
