This recommended the socket approach. In CUPS the URI is: socket://192.168.11.5:9100 Simples! That worked like a charm. The testpage came out over the network. Next step; disconnect the USB cable and run the previous command to make sure. Problem solved. The article recommended using ipp but one respondent had no luck with that and tried using sockets and found that that worked fine. Does anybody know if there is a good reason to prefer ipp rather than socket? Are there security issues or bandwidth limitations or ...? Next things to try are sending images and printing from either laptop. Thanking you for your attention Len
