Port 9100 is what you want for HP printers using their "jetdirect" server.
Port 631 is for print servers like cups that speak IPP.  Don't think any
HP printers speak IPP, but I haven't looked recently.

There are other specialized URI's that work as well.  In my MDV 2008.1
(that I am currently using (up 101 days, 18:17), the following got set up:
hp:/net/hp_LaserJet_1320_series?ip=192.168.0.111

I have had mixed success with the MDV printer config tool finding
networked HP printers.  Worked perfectly in 2008.1 (as did virtually
everything else, like KDE3), but on my 2010.1 laptop I had to give
the IP address manually.  So much for progress  (don't get me
started on the still only marginally stable mess that is KDE4).

I have also encountered wireless routers that have had issues
dealing with broadcast packets, so it is possible that the lack
of automated setup by the MDV tool is due to your router.
