Setting up HP1020 Laserjet printer

For something so simple I'm having a heck of a time. A friend of mine
sold me the above printer for $25.00, it's like new. A popup keeps
saying I need a propritary driver. I already have HPLIP installed and I
know it's working since my HP6L works just fine. I've also looked in the
.dat file which shows all the HPLIP supported printers and the 1020 is
listed.  When trying to print a test page from the HP Device manager it
says it starts and finishes the print job but nothing happens. I see the
