So you like I can connect the phone and computer using a miniusb cable
however my problem is that my wife's Nokia 2600 has no usb port. I can
sync the two phones together and transfer files between them which is
what I may have to do if I can't get bluetooth to work. Asking basically
this same question on LQ.org I've received this reply:

You can check which Bluetooth profiles your system is advertising with
the command:

sdptool browse local

You are looking for either OBEX Push or OBEX File Transfer to be listed. 
If you don't see either of those, then that is the problem.

I see no reference to OBEX in the above.

I'm still convinced that I must be missing something since bluetooth
transfers will go from the computer to the phone but not from the phone
