Hi Chris

I have a motorola V3 I did hcitool scan and like yourself got nothing back
strange I thought.  I checked the version of the bluetooth I'm  using in
my task bar.  It's bluetooth applet 1.8

I enabled bluetooth again on M3, then right clicked on my bluetooth icon
in task bar 'setup new device' this recognised my phone and gave me a pin
to type into my phone which I did.  Phone and laptop now paired ok.

Now this might work if know your phone address:  you can type this into
your nautilus browser:

obex://[00:1A:DB:0E:B8:E4]/

make sure you replace the above addres with your own motorola address. 
What I see is Audio, pictures, and video folders.  hopefully this will
allow you transfer files from your pc to your phone and your phone to your
pc.  All this is done through bluetooth using obex.  I ran the sdptool
browse on my M3. and got the following results:

Let me know me know how you get on with your motorola.  My Nokia works
with no problem,however the Motorola seems to be a different beast all
together.
