Thanks for that information.  I had been going by the --help 
documentation which is not all that clear.  One of the first things I 
tried was 'get_iplayer --get nnn' but always get "no match for nnn in 
cache" or some such even though tv.cache definitely lists a programme 
against that number.  Will try your extended command and also look for 
flvstreamer.
