Skype problem, no signal from mike

I am having a problem getting Skype to run properly on Mandriva 2010.  The video part seems to be fine but I can not get the microphone to work:  When I make a test call, I  can not hear myself the way you are supposed to.  What to do? 

Googling the subject leaves me with the impression that others have had the same problem, but none of the proposed solutions, I have come across, have worked for me.  Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

System details:
Mandriva 2010 PP
Skype 2.1.0.47
Logitech Quick Cam Pro 9000 

I should mention also that audio works fine in other applications, and that I can record audio from the mike with Audacity.
