Looks like faad is the likely culprit. Uninstalled the mix of MD and
plf parts of vlc, and reinstalled all parts from plf [is in
backports]. The plf version of vlc now plays mp4s OK too. Just thought
I'd pass this on if any of you are interested in using vlc [a nice
player, btw].
