If you are in run level 3 (terminal mode), startx, startx GNOME, 
startx KDE,
and mcc are the commands you want, I suspect.

The startx will start up your default desktop, whatever that may be.
The mcc launches Mandriva Linux Contro Center in a mode suitable
for a terminal window.
