Many thank for taking the trouble to reply.

I installed the missing bits that you listed.  An incredibly verbose 
process went ahead and then stalled, requiring some bits of Alsa not 
already installed.  One that was dealt with the "make" completed.  An 
executable linpsk is now present, with a full gui screen and, in theory, 
working.  It doesn't work as it should, as it seems to be unable to read 
its own config files but I doubt you can offer much guidance on that.  I 
think an email to the originator will be more appropriate.

Thanks again for getting the "make" sorted out for me.
