If you haven't tried to urpmi vlc-more-skins  which will want to install 
svlc also, you might give that a try and see if it automagically fixes 
things for you.
warning;  some skins are really terrible and don't have any menu buttons 
at all.  If you get stuck with one of them, you can use  vlc --motion  
and get to a workable skin so you can change them.
