is this an "upgrade in place" where you keep some {?/home?) files?
you may be seeing a UID permissions kinda thing?
is port 57175 open in all the firewalls and the port you have configured 
courier to listen on?
have you considered or tried running a "tail -f /var/log/messages" in a 
su - (root) text console to see if there is anything to be learned?
