Trying to take back? No. It just seems odd to me that everyone is
discussing forking MNF on the MNF mailing list. As I said, I don't
really care what you do... it's all open source, and you're freely
available to do what you like with it. But I think it's rude to
discuss that proposition on the list of the product you're planning
to fork.
The decision has been made, a consensus informally reached, and
someone asked what the next step should be. I respectfully asked
that the next step should be a separate mailing list to discuss what
to do with it... nothing more.
Look, this isn't a new scenario. I was dissatisfied with Corporate
Server to do what I wanted, so over a year and a half ago I took the
Mandrake 9.2 base and forked it to start a self-propelled project
called Annvix. Out of respect for Mandriva, I do not discuss Annvix
on any of the mailing lists, and I don't include more normal Annvix-
ad signature on a Mandriva mailing list. This is not because I'm
trying to hide what I'm doing, and Annvix is far less competition to
a Mandriva project than "Florin's Firewall" would be. I do this out
of respect for the fact that Annvix is *not* a Mandriva product or
project, and it shouldn't be discussed on their lists. Anyone who
wants to discuss Annvix is asked to either subscribe to the Annvix
mailing lists or to email me directly.
This isn't tyranny, this isn't about taking a list back, this isn't
about taking a product back, this is all about one thing: respect.

Why? I don't understand what I said that made everyone so upset.
You folks were discussing forking the product. Are you upset because
I asked you to move it somewhere else? Would it have been better if
I put on my moderator hat and said discussing the fork was off
topic? Either way, *all* I did was ask you to talk about it
elsewhere. I didn't ask you to stop, I didn't rant and scream, I
didn't demand anything. I just asked you to, out of respect for the
company you're planning to fork a product from, to discuss it
somewhere else. There might be people here who actually want to
discuss *MNF* and not "Florin's Firewall". Why are you so offended
because I asked you to move the discussion?

Huh? How do you figure we're taking a Microsoft route? I'm
completely lost. Did we threaten to sue anyone? Are we telling you
to stop? Are we asking you to pay a fee to fork it? Absolutely
not! I asked for one simple thing and as a result some of you people
have utterly lost all common sense! Comparing my asking you to move
discussion to another list to Microsoft tactics? Excuse me? That's
the most insane thing I think I've possibly ever heard! Don't you
think you're over-reacting a little bit?
And absolutely there is more to Mandriva than just the firewall,
which is why I'm confused as to why everyone thinks we should be
giving it away for free. We give the desktop version of Mandriva
away for free. We make the CVS available for MNF... you'll notice
it's not hidden, it's not locked away, it's not out of the public's
hands. Which is another reason I'm insulted you compare us to
Microsoft. But despite all of this, and all we do, it seems like
it's not enough. You get upset because we don't give you the final
product with a bowtie and silver plate? Come on... if you want the
fancy wrapping, you need to pay for it. But there's nothing stopping
you from getting your hands dirty and compiling a few things out of
CVS is there? Absolutely not.

I hate to say it, and I don't mean to sound rude, but I think you're
reading far too much into what's happening. Conspiracy theorist
perhaps?

You too, Carl, but I must admit that I am completely and utterly
confused by not only your attitude and threats, but by your entire
rational. It absolutely does not make sense to me.
