That could well be it.  One of my daughters is a member of a 
professional group where email is used as the major contact method.  On 
more than one occasion I have had to clean her box because an infected 
message has come from that group.  (Her AV catches the mail and warns, 
but mbox messages can't be disinfected without losing the whole 
mailbox.)  When she moved house a mass-mailing was sent to everyone in 
her addressbook - so anyone who collects the addresses from incoming 
mail would have mine in their addressbook.

I can't understand why people should collect incoming addresses.  You 
reply if it is someone you want to talk to, so outgoing would deal with 
that.  Manually adding an adress that doesn't need an answer is easy 
enough.  It can only be that a default is being used without any 
awareness of the dangers.
