The lifetime is 5 years; I believe if you buy the product, you'll get 
updates until the product is EOL'd (so if you bought today, just under 
5 years, if you bought next year, 4 years of updates, etc.).

The updates are from a private server; you'll get access to it once you 
buy and register CS3 AFAIK.
