FYI and for the archives - I seem to have got rid of it, with some off-list 
help.  The required command was

rpm -e --noscripts kernel-2.6.11.12mdk-1-1mdk

Without the '--noscripts' it wouldn't work, but I ran this, rebuilt the db 
and tried the rpm -qa|grep kernel again, and it has finally gone.  Thanks 
to all who tried to help.
