Consider a person of Gael's responsibilities as an operator of sorts. 
Where might show others how to use the qa.mandriva.com site for filing
bugs, and how a person in his position might call attention to a
particular filed bug.  These sorts of positions don't have quantifiable
value except in loss of customer loyalty.  I don't believe I've ever
corresponded with Gael directly.  But he's someone I know by
reputation.  I once held such a PR position at a local ISP in the
Midwest of the United States (execpc.com)  I was later let go also.  My
advice.  Make sure the people inside your company know how important
your job is to the bottom line of the company so you don't get let go
when money gets tight.

I hope he's not permanently laid off.

Sorry for being off-topic.  But I'd disagree, I think every employee has
a part to play in the "output quality" of any company to varying degrees.
