I found instructions for renewing the certificate which worked.  The key
was to first rename:

/etc/ssl/apache/server.key  --to--  /etc/ssl/apache/server.key.backup
and
/etc/ssl/apache/server.crt  --to--  /etc/ssl/apache/server.crt.backup

Then run
/usr/lib/ssl/apache-mod_ssl/gentestcrt.sh

By default the keys are generated to last only one year.
