I am using a USB DVD. I tried to perform a backup using both "DVD disks" and "USB Key/Disk" without success. So you should use a DVD disk, whether it's connected through SATA or USB doesn't make a difference for MondoRescue. Using USB disk doesn't work as mondoarchive tries to create a bootable filesystem on it, and can't. All what it should do is create a bootable ISO image and burn it to your drive.
