Gnome-PPP Difficulties within Morphix

I am managing to work around this program ... because whenever I
attempt to use it as a user I get error messages ... partly about
permissions ...?   When I attempt to use it as 'root' then I cannot get
into an xdisplay.  

What I am doing is running pon/poff in a terminal as 'root'.  This works
reliably after I used pppconfig to setup the values for my ISP.  It
works, ... but is timewasting and gives me NO feedback on the progress
of my login.  Any help would be appreciated.  Morphix seems to be great
on this 366MHz laptop.  Morphix is installed on my hard drive.
