I'm not too sure what it was either but now it works fine and I can see 
arp requests in vlan2 from the spy box.  I did some preliminary testing 
and it turns out that when I add vlan3 to the bridge, arp replies (from 
the gateway) never make it through the bridge to some specific 
customers.  I'll see it if I tcpdump on br0 or in.2, but I won't see it 
go through the hub which is directly after the 'in' interface.

So far, the culprit is the bridge itself, or maybe the tg3 driver...  
I'd like some input as to exactly what information is needed to figure 
out which part of the bridge code/configuration could be at fault.  I'll 
have to re-check, but so far it looks like the affected customer's mac 
just doesn't get added to the bridge table.  I also noticed that it 
vanished from the bridge table (brctl showmacs br0) very shortly after I 
added vlan3 to the bridge but that might be normal behavior, the number 
of mac addresses in the table went from over 300 to about 200.

Anyway, I hope this helps some of the more knowledgeable people on this 
list figure out what's going on.  Getting this to work would definitely 
make my life a lot easier.
