The [busy] doesn't indicate anything.  You could try running the
"test_modem" script from the pcmcia-cs package, but if it got this far
it is probably working.

In your original message you said the system hung when you inserted
the card.  Now you say it hangs when you do "cardctl ident".  Which is
correct?

The "socket timed out" message is bad news.  That is a very low level
failure; the card never signalled "ready" after it was powered up.

Can you run "dump_cis" on the card in the other (laptop?) machine?  I
wonder if maybe this card draws too much power for the palmtop?

You could also try putting:

  CORE_OPTS="unreset_limit=100"

in /etc/sysconfig/pcmcia.
