lock ups on compaq 2100

I had this problem before, and fixed it, but
apparently don't remember how.

I compile/install pcmcia 3.2.4
and install it
changing /etc/sysconfig/pcmcia 2nd line to i83625(or
whatever the # is)

then when i stick a pcmcia card in, it beeps, the
lights go on, then a lock up.

on boot, pcmcia starts, but if a card is in, beeps,
lights  up, then total lockup.
help?
