Kernel vs. Standalone?

Hi there, just a short question: When using the kernel version of ds.c and cs.c could I still use the client modules that come with PCMCIA CS 3.2.1 package? Or do I have to use the drivers within the kernel source tree? Are there big advantages of using the standalone version instead of the kernel version especially with respect to embedded systems? I think I would prefer having ds, cs and maybe ide-cs built into my kernel and only drivers I won't need too often as driver modules. But I am not sure why...
