Are you sure it is a complete hang?  Do all applications stop running?
Is there any chance that some important system service is relying on a
running network?

How about if you just do 'ifconfig eth1 down' yourself, rather than
doing the 'cardctl eject'?

It might be worth reporting to the maintainer of the orinoco_cs
driver.  Of course, any such bug report should also include crucial
information like, what brand and model of laptop this is, what
distribution you're using, what kernel version, what version of the
pcmcia-cs drivers, and the startup messages from the PCMCIA drivers.
But you were about to provide that information anyway, right? ;)
