If I where you I would return your still working xbox and buy a
refurbished one online to replace. Refurbs are usally older version of
the xbox with nothing wrong with them.

As for the fried xbox did you get a 1024 kb version of the bios or
256? If you put in the wrong size the xbox is dead, dead, dead...!
Until you get a modchip. Preferibly one with an external programer so
that if you screw it up it is no big deal.

For that matter once you get the fried box working you can pull the
old trick of rescueing a dead mobo, boot from a good bios, replace the
bios chips (in this case  switch which one is getting power) and then
reflash.
