Ok.. well this information was not available for me to find while i tried to get it working.
There was some indications about spdif working for some ppl but not on what conditions nor setup 
howtos. This clarifies installation a bit.

This i do not know for sure, but with my desk PC it was working ok using Aureon sky 5.1
and mplayer

as far as i know, David's patch is copy of the original spdif patch for 2.4 kernels that can be 
found from xbox-Linux CVS. What it actually does is bit out of my scope while Im not an expert in 
the alsa/sound field.

I have to disagree on this a bit, as far as i know, a52 do not implement ability to pass thrue 
original AC3 from .vob into the spdif line as is. I tried this ones, PCM comes to AV but i get only 
2 channels, not all L,R,C,RL,RR and LFE channels (My AV shows channels available on the panel) as I 
should get on plain AC3 stream. Tho Im not sure if it was just my lack of skill to make it work.
