Yes I think it works fine for most sound hardware, it's only the odd
soundcard that has problems.

is the large thread on the alsa-user list that describes my situation
almost exactly. Note the guy with the problem is running a bog-standard
nforce motherboard, not an xbox.

Yes, sorry I should have worded my last email more clearly.

I only get AC3/DTS passthrough using xine. In mplayer (which I prefer to
use) I need to downmix any multichannel soundtrack to stereo PCM.

It's not a massive problem for me as I don't watch DVDs on my xbox and
freeview (DVB-T) doesn't broadcast AC3, but it would be nice to get it
working :)
