As far as I know, and no, I've never even looked inside ALSA/Sound til I attempted to port that patch, is that it simply duplicates the PCM output to the SPDIF output. Hideous, to an ALSA dev, no doubt. But that's what it appears to do, anyhow. I'd like to get a definite confirm that it is unnecessary, if the setup is done properly with the 'xbox=1' option, and if so, exactly what steps are needed to do it, in a distro-independent way. ie Install the alsa 1.0.5 package, and run mplayer with '-ao <etc>' options, so we can ensure that the xbox-linux distros, (Xebian and GentooX) pick up this too, so they can work out of the box. I won't be at all upset that the patch is unnecessary - every patch we no longer have to maintain is a source for celebration. However, as I muttered before, it *would* be nice if those who succeed in getting upstream to adopt patches/workarounds tell the 'normal xbox-linux developers', either on IRC, or by posting to this list, so we know what we can pension off in our CVS, and don't waste time porting obsolete patches when upstream always has them or variations of them. Plus, you get credit and gratitude from 'us lot' for having persuaded upstream to take them. Now, if only Linus would.....
