I *think* my partition table had a 'flags' word with a bit that said whether/not the partition is "active" (and I'm pretty sure my code (in the Xbox kernel patch) looks at that bit). Instead of calling it the 'active' flag, I suppose it could be the 'active FATX partition' flag (and some other flag could then be used for non-Xbox partitions). I don't have my code handy to verify that this flag is used.
