I'm using Debian Etch, updated from a Debian mirror 4 days ago.
My printer is fully supported (Samsung 1510) - I know that because a *previous*
version of CUPS worked. Moreover, I can generate a .gdi file with Ghostscript
and cat it to the printer, when it prints perfectly. So all the pieces are in
place, CUPS just isn't bringing them together.

I would venture to say that making unwarranted assumptions the basis of your
post - as you have done - results in a message which adds nothing useful to the
discussion. The information content of your post is that there exists *one*
configuration of hardware and software (yours) for which the CUPS version
included in *one* distro (the one you're using) works out-of-the-box. Nobody
ever doubted that. This thread is about what happens when it doesn't work
out-of-the-box.
