sending error messages to user

Hello all,
I am writing a filter program. Whenever I get some error I want to convey this
error to the user by opening up a  popup window saying the error message or by
some means which attracts user attention. I use Kprinter to give print. Once i
click print the dialog is closed, and i have no way of knowing the print was
successfull or failure.  But the error messages are in /var/log/cups/error_log
file.  Is there  any possibility to notify the user about the print status
